If you are looking after a child with a physical or learning disability, or life limiting condition you probably do not think of yourself as a carer. You may see yourself as just another parent looking after their child.
However, being the parent of a child with special needs brings additional pressures and problems. The time you spend looking after your child may well go far beyond that of most parents. You may also find it difficult to find the most appropriate help and support for you and your child may have to face the huge uncertainties, stresses and challenges of managing your child’s condition.
Research shows that it can cost almost 3 times more to bring up a child with a disability, compared with other children. This, added to the fact that many parents of disabled children are unable to work because of care responsibilities, means that there is a high risk of poverty.
These are some of the issues you may be concerned about as a parent carer:
- childminding and respite care
- benefits for you and your child
- your child’s education
- planning for the future
- where to find help and support
